This exhibition, “Improvisions - Creative Expressions” drew more entries than any other exhibition in the past ten years. Perhaps the avalanche of entries was due to being “holed” up during Covid. The quality and diversity of the show is worthy of a visit to Blue Hill. Many artists are showing for the first time at Blue Hill, while others have been consistently selected by their outstanding work.

The exhibition gives the viewer a broad interpretation of the theme,  showing various approaches in different mediums exploring various methods and subjects. The theme of improvisation is widely associated with music; however, visual artists also engage in making spontaneous decisions as their artwork evolves to reveal what they wish to convey.

The exhibition include works by, Cecelia André, Brad Conklin, Joanna Dickey & Paul Tappenden, David Friedman, Bari Goodman, Norma Greenwood, Carol Greiff Lagstein, Shelley Haven, Polly King, Ray Lagstein, Dustin Liebenow, Carla Lobmier, Alise Loebelsohn, Grace Malupa, Helene Manzo, Frank Manzo, Kathleen Migliore-Newton, Eleanor Grace Miller, Douglas Newton, Carl Rattner, Rosalind schneider, Ariadne Scibetta, Teru Simon, Bonnie Steinsnyder, Miroslav Vrzala.

A special exhibition, in the newly renovated  white marble lobby, called The Gift,   honors the works of Sidney Simon (1917-1999). The exhibition is a celebration of Simon’s legacy and accomplished career. Each of the works in the exhibition is being generously gifted to various prestigious institutions throughout the USA.

Sidney Simon was an American painter, sculptor, muralist, art school cofounder and American Official War Artist. One of his sculptures, the Four Seasons Fountain sculpture is located at World Wide Plaza at 50 St. and 8th Ave. in New York City. Small bronze maquettes of three of the figures is on display at Blue Hill. Each of the works in the exhibition is being generously gifted to various prestigious institutions throughout the USA.

Please listen to an interview on: History on the Radio: Sidney Simon, presented by the Historical Society of Rockland County, found on all major podcast platforms about the artist, Rockland County and the exhibition. The program explores the life and artistic legacy of the artist through the voices of two of his children Teru and Mark Simon, sharing memories of their father and recollections of growing up in Rockland County.

The exhibition runs from April 30 until October 14, 2022. Viewing hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am – 4:00pm accessing the building through the upper lobby entrances.
